Conversion is a big part of AEO, and it's getting bigger

Summary

AI tools can recommend your company without sending you a click. People read the answer, then type your name into the browser or Google it. That visit shows up as direct or paid traffic and often lands on your homepage or a paid page. So conversion on those pages is a big part of answer engine optimization (AEO), and it matters even more as organic traffic loses importance.

Key takeaways

  • Getting cited is the first step. The visit still has to convert.
  • A lot of AI influence shows up as direct or paid traffic, not as a referral from ChatGPT or Claude.
  • Direct traffic keeps going up across the industry, while organic is losing importance.
  • Your homepage and paid pages are picking up more of these visitors, so fix those first.
  • AEO now involves far more teams than SEO.

What is AEO, and is it just SEO?

No, SEO is one part of it. Answer engine optimization is about getting recommended by tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. That also depends on your content, PR, reviews and positioning. What happens after the recommendation depends on your web and paid teams.

You can win the citation and still lose the customer.

Do people click through from ChatGPT or Claude to your website?

Often they don't click the link. Someone gets your name from an AI tool, opens a new tab, then types it in or Googles it. I've had this conversation with a lot of web and marketing people lately, and the same pattern keeps coming up.

i do this too. ask claude, then just type the name in :)

Surveys point the same way. Buyers still come to check you out, they just don't always use the link in the answer.

Why is direct traffic going up while organic goes down?

Across the industry you can see direct traffic going up more and more, while organic is losing importance. AI search is one reason. When someone hears your name in an answer and types it in, your analytics has no idea where that came from.

After the AI answer, the buyer...Your analytics says
Clicks the link in the answerAI referral
Types your URL into the browserDirect
Googles your name, clicks the organic resultOrganic brand
Googles your name, clicks your adPaid brand
All four started with the same AI answer. Only the first one says so.

So if you only watch your AI referral number, you miss a big part of what AI is doing for you.

Which pages get the most traffic from AI search?

A lot of it goes to your homepage. And when people Google your name, they might click your brand ad and land on a paid page, so those pages need the same attention.

You can already see the homepage effect in tracked AI referrals. In one study of 28 B2B SaaS companies, homepages brought in 67 of all 82 leads from AI tools.

Why does conversion matter more when traffic goes down?

Because the same number of leads now has to come from fewer visits. You can't fully control whether an AI tool sends a click, but you can improve what happens when someone arrives.

8,000 visits x 2%160 leads

How do I check what ChatGPT and Claude say about my company?

Ask it, then compare the answer with your own homepage. It takes about 15 minutes.

Try this on your own site

15 min
  1. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: "What does [company] do, who is it for, and what are the best alternatives?"
  2. Write down the words they use to describe you and who they say you're for.
  3. Open your homepage in incognito and read only the first screen. Does it say the same thing?

How do I optimize my homepage and paid pages for AI search visitors?

These visitors already have your name and usually a description of you. They've come to check whether that's true, so make it easy.

Be clear right away
Say who it's for and what it does on the first screen, using the words buyers use.
Show proof early
They got your name from a tool and want to know you're real. Show customers, numbers and reviews.
Make pricing easy to understand
27% of buyers say AI answers don't reflect real pricing, so your site has to clear that up.
Help them compare
46% compare an AI recommendation against alternatives. Give them that answer before they go looking.
Give one clear next step
Someone who came to check you out shouldn't have to work out what to do next.
✕ Common mistake

Sending brand ads to a generic landing page.

The page treats them as cold traffic and explains things they already know.

✓ Do instead

Treat brand clicks as people already checking you out.

Give them proof, pricing and a way to compare, in the same words as your ad.

How do I measure conversions from AI search?

You won't get a perfect number. Look at these together and watch the trend over time.

Ask people
Add a "how did you hear about us?" field with ChatGPT, Claude and other AI tools as options.
Watch the trend
Track brand search and direct traffic side by side, month over month.
Split conversion by channel
Look at homepage and paid page conversion separately for direct, brand and AI referral visits.

FAQs

Does traffic from ChatGPT, Claude and other LLMs convert better than Google?

Often yes, especially in B2B. People coming from an LLM have usually asked follow-up questions, compared options and read a description of you before they arrive, so they're more educated and higher intent than someone clicking a search result early in their research. Studies disagree on how big the gap is though, from large multipliers to almost no difference, so don't plan around a number. Check your own conversion by channel.

How much traffic comes from ChatGPT, Claude and other AI tools?

Tracked AI referrals are still small, around 1% of website traffic or less in most studies. That number undercounts AI's influence, because many people read the answer and then come to you through direct, brand search or a brand ad.

Why does traffic from ChatGPT, Claude and other LLMs show up as direct?

Someone who reads an answer and types your name into the browser is direct traffic by definition, so analytics has no way to connect the visit to the AI tool. Some apps also don't pass referrer data, so even a click from the answer can end up as direct.

How do I track traffic from ChatGPT and Claude in GA4?

Create a custom channel group or segment for referrals from chatgpt.com, claude.ai, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. It will only show the visits that kept their referrer, so read it next to brand search, direct traffic and a "how did you hear about us?" field.

Why is my organic traffic down when my rankings haven't changed?

You can hold the same position and still get fewer clicks, because AI Overviews and other answers on the results page can satisfy people before they click. That's why watching rankings alone isn't enough anymore. Look at clicks, brand search and conversions too.

Which pages should I optimize first for AI search traffic?

Start with your homepage, then the pages your brand ads point to, then pricing. These are where people go to check you out after an AI tool mentions you, so small improvements there affect the most valuable visits.

Do I need separate landing pages for ChatGPT or Claude traffic?

No. Much of this traffic reaches you through direct or brand search, so you couldn't reliably send it to a special page anyway. Fix your homepage and the paid pages people already land on.

Do blog posts still matter for AEO?

Yes, but expect them to help you get found more than to convert directly. In the TripleDart study above, general blog posts got 12,135 AI sessions and no tracked leads, while homepages got most of them. That's last-click data, so a blog post can still be what got you mentioned in the first place.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Buyers use both. In Semrush's survey, 75% still use search engines as part of vendor research, and 41% start with AI and then validate through search. Keep doing SEO, and treat AEO as the wider job around it.

What's the difference between AEO and GEO?

Mostly the name. AEO stands for answer engine optimization and GEO for generative engine optimization, and people use both for getting recommended by tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.

Who should own AEO in a company?

SEO, content, PR, product marketing, paid and web all feed into it, so it rarely fits inside one team. Name one owner to pull it together, and make conversion part of their job so the work doesn't stop at getting cited.
